This is NOT the highly-abridged plotline encapsulated in the movies. So what does that leave? Comic relief.Very well read indeed by a talented and well-qualified "solo" reader.īe prepared to appreciate, and endure, the many themes in this very long book (1200 English pages, 1900 French pages). And they can't be love interests because we already have that in Nala. So Simba has to meet characters who help him, but they can't be villainous and they can't be too heroic. After Simba has watched his father get murdered and then gets sent into exile, would it be appropriate to have an intense, solemn, serious character - or two characters - help him through his journey? That would make the whole story pretty dark.Īnd if the supporting characters are heroic, then either they steal focus from Simba's journey, or they imply a backstory and a heroic journey which we never get to see, or which would have to be shoehorned into the film. So there has to be some kind of supporting characters for him to encounter and learn from, and who help him survive all alone in the desert. Simba can't just be all alone for that part of the movie until Nala comes along. Here's one possible answer - what else would these supporting characters be? You say Timon and Pumbaa don't do much in The Lion King, but they do.
